Increasing the value of your business
http://www.capitalmagazine.ca/prosper/business-sale/upping-business-value-2-4738
This Canadian Capital magazine article talks about one of the concepts that I often speak to entrepreneurs about … there are things you can do now to increase the value of your business when you want to sell in a few years.
The most common issue for small businesses in Atlantic is the heavy reliance of the business on the owner as the key manager. If you want to maximize the value of your business (and in some cases, turn an unsaleable business into one that can be sold), start finding ways to remove your direct day-to-day involvement in the business. Consider hiring a general manager that will let you start working on the business, rather than just in the business. Create standardized and documented processes so that employees don’t need to come to you with every minor problem. Consider motivating your management team by including the concept of “shareholder value creation” in their bonus plan.
Burnside property acquisition
Toronto based C2C Industrial Properties (CCH: TSX-V) has acquired a collection of eight multi-tenant industrial buildings in Burnside Industrial Park (Dartmouth, NS) for $56 mil. The seller was not disclosed.
Note the mention of the $25 bil shipbuilding contract as one reason for the deal. I expect we’ll be seeing a lot more of this being mentioned in acquisition announcements in Nova Scotia in the coming years.
Movember update
At the midpoint of Movember (the campaign for prostate cancer), this scruff is about all I can grow (click the link for an updated photo)! Surely this is worth a donation?!
Movember is underway
Please consider making a small donation to my Movember campaign, the cause being to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. I’ll suffer a little personal embarrassment (with my weak attempt at growing a ‘stache) for the good of the cause.
