When someone offers to buy your business

leave a comment »

A good article from John Warrillow (author of ‘Built to Sell’) on what NOT to do when someone ‘out of the blue’ offers to buy your business.

  1. Sign an LOI before considering whether there are other potential purchasers.
  2. Do it yourself, i.e. not hiring an M&A advisor to help you consider whether there are other purchasers.
  3. Playing too hard to get, i.e. never at least chat with someone who approaches you — you never know what you might find out.

According to John’s data, M&A activity has returned to an all-time high.  We’re certainly seeing lots of buyer interest in Atlantic Canada.

More insurance broker consolidation

Dartmouth, NS-based A.P. Reid Insurance announced the acquisition of Waterdown, ON’s Robert C. Davis Insurance.  A.P. Reid says this is their first Ontario acquisition after expanding into the province earlier this year.

As readers of this blog know, this is another in a long series of acquisitions in the P&C broker industry, originally fueled by insurer acquisitions but increasingly now about mid-size brokers jockeying for critical mass (but largely still financed by insurers).
