The New Glasgow News is reporting that the NB-based Smith family has acquired New Glasgow, NS’s Target Mazda car dealership.

The Smith family also own Mazda dealerships in Dieppe, NB and Truro, NS, while Target Mazda claims to be the oldest Mazda dealership in Atlantic Canada.

This is another in a long series of transactions in the consolidating auto dealer industry, which has been commented on in this blog many times.

Congratulations to the Clark family in Fredericton, NB on closing the sale of their Toyota dealership.  The purchaser was the Girvan family, owners of Acadia Toyota in Moncton.

For readers of this blog, you know that this is yet another example of the rapid consolidation of the Canadian new car dealership sector, which is happening all across Atlantic Canada.

Halifax-based Steele Auto Group has acquired Coleman’s Autohaus, a Volkswagen dealership in Bridgewater.

As discussed here previously, there is probably no other industry currently that has (and continues to) consolidate faster than the Canadian car dealership sector.  This is largely driven by the economics of the industry, including the capital-intensive nature of the business.

Halifax-based O’Regans Automotive Group has acquired Ed Backman’s Halifax BMW.

The consolidation trend in the retail auto industry has been going on for some time and has only accelerated, given the capital intensity of the dealership business and the aging demographics of owners.  It is now said that over 60% of dealerships in Canada are owned by dealer groups, of which O’Regans is but one of many (including in our region).

On Facebook yesterday, Moncton’s Rallye Motors announced that it had acquired Champlain Nissan, also in Moncton.

This is another in a long list of consolidations in the retail automotive industry, where multi-brand dealer groups (large and small) are now said to control over 50% of dealerships in the country.
